7 1/4″ gauge Manning Wardle
A 3/8 scale model of an 1860’s 18 inch gauge locomotive, that ran at the Woolwich Arsenal and Chatham Dockyard.
Built to the “Anna” design serialised in Model Engineer. I was one of the first to start building to this locomotive, buying the castings after only a couple of issues had been published. I suspect I am the last to finish.

I concentrated on making the visible components first, so it looked like progress was being made. This has left me with all the fiddly bits to make.
I constructed this building stand from an article in model engineer by DAG Brown, who also designed the loco. I subsequently found the castor wheels were inadequate, but I was lucky enough to find some wheels off a rocket launcher – which weigh more that the rest of the stand.
Spring hangers formed from one piece of steel
The buffer heads were designed to be made from a 4 1/2 inch round bar. Not wishing to generate too much swarf, I made the heads from flat plate welded to 2 1/2 inch bar.
Profiling the buffer heads, with a specially made Myford attachment. The cross slide follows a curved piece of plate of the correct radius.
